Host, Dr. Luke Hobson

My name is Luke Hobson (Ed.D), the host and creator of the Iron University Podcast. I am a lover of learning and have been in higher education for the last ten years as an instructor, instructional designer, and academic advisor. I still find it fascinating to read, hear, and see the scientific methods of how we learn.

I realized that there was a gap within the fitness and nutrition industry. It’s easy to find exercises and diets that others claimed to work from them – but no one told me how to learn the process from start to finish. It always felt like I was thrown into a marathon before learning how to first walk or crawl.

That's what led to the creation of this podcast. I know others feel the same pain of being overwhelmed with the amount of content that's out there that fails to cover the most important beginning steps. That's why I made this podcast and that's why you are here and ready to learn.

If you like to know more about my story, you can read it below.

It all started in 2016...

I was arguably in the worst shape of my life. I put on quite a bit of "happy weight" from nights out with my fiancee and friends. I knew it was time to make a change one day when I felt winded walking up a flight of stairs. I had big dreams and ambitions, but there's no point if my body couldn't keep up with my mind.

Now, I have always been known as the guy who knew a lot about exercise and nutrition, but I wasn't able to keep to the healthy habits. They would always tend to fall by the wayside and I began to feel like a hypocrite. How can I know so much about exercise and nutrition yet I can't figure out how to lose fat permanently? Sure, I could lose 5 - 10 pounds, but that would come right back within a few months. This time, I was determined to give it all I had and approach fat loss in a different way.. The only problem was that I didn't know the right approach yet.

Fast forward to one day at work, and the light bulb went off inside of my head. You see, I have worked in higher education for numerous years and it was my role at this university to develop learning resources for students. My director and I had been effectively assisting students with learning by changing their behaviors and helping them to be cognizant of their own learning styles. Our efforts successfully increased student retention and their final scores for their classes.

As we sat there looking at the data, that's when it dawned upon me about how I had been approaching exercise and dieting in the completely wrong way! Instead, I had this crazy idea of, "What if I could take all I know about learning and combine it with all I know about how to lose weight?" And there ladies and gentlemen, is what created a domino effect of my results.

I began to write down about the different steps I tell students to take with mastering content (reflection, practice, mindset, etc.). I applied my knowledge on learning and my knowledge on fitness and in 10 months, this is what happened:

30 Pounds gone.

And I mean gone. It's never come back!

The above picture is a 30 pound difference with 10% body fat gone. My mind was blown. What I thought about and put into place actually worked for me! I didn't practice a ridiculous diet. I didn't strain my body with a hardcore exercise routine. And I certainly didn't take some "magical" supplement that spot reduced fat. All I did was follow my own beliefs with how to learn and created new healthy routines that I could stick with.

That's why I made this podcast and why I'm in the process of writing a book. I want to share with you all I know because (guess what) my method will get you results. You'll be able to take your time, break down barriers that are holding you back, understand how to eat, and many more tips that may sound simple, yet they will provide results.
